Chapter 13
Remi was preparing breakfast the next morning when Jake and Midnight came bouncing down the stairs.
âJake, now that Tigerâs doing better, we need to think about getting you back into classes. I know youâre keeping up with your lessons at home, but you should be interacting with your friends. I donât want you to be even more isolated than you already have been.â
âBut Midnightâs still a baby! Whoâll take care of him while Iâm at school?â
âHe doesnât need constant supervision⦠unlike you,â Remi replied. Heâll be fine till you get home after school. Maybe thatâll be an incentive for you to come straight home and not dawdle in Sandyâs neighborhood. After that attack I especially donât want you hanging around in the RDL, not that you should have been there in the first place. Why donât you invite your friend over to meet Midnight? Just donât pester Tiger, okay?â
âWhat about Tiger? Wonât he need someone to help him out till Doc Stafford says heâs okay?â Jake pressed the issue, still looking for an excuse to stay home.
âNot that I agree with him, but he says heâs not going to take the pain pills anymore. He can handle the antibiotics now that heâs more alert. Heâll be fine as long as he doesnât do anything to aggravate his back. I canât believe how fast he seems to be recovering from his injuries. I thought heâd be laid up for at least a month.â
âIâll give you one more week, okay? Then itâs back to school, brat. I need to arrange an escort for you anyway until we catch Chris.â Remi sighed inwardly. Not that he didnât want Tiger to heal but he just needed time to convince Tiger to move in with him and Jake. It wasnât mandatory for Tiger to live in the barracks as long as he lived close to the fort. He was worried that it would be easier for Tiger to forget about them once he went back to work and got another assignment in the field.
Sitting down at the breakfast bar with Jake, Remi looked down at his hands, idly fidgeting with a dishrag. He cleared his throat and started to speak but his voice broke. Starting again he said âJake, I need to ask you something and I want you to be honest with me.â
Jake glanced up from his food and saw the serious expression on Remiâs face. âSure, Remi. Iâve never lied to you. You said lying is dishonorable. Is something wrong?â
âLook me in the eyes Jake and tell meâ¦.â His voice broke again, and he could feel tears threatening to fall. He blinked them away and cleared his throat again. âWas Tiger raped in that alley?â
Jakeâs fork clattered to the floor and he looked down at his plate, refusing to make eye contact with Remi.
âJake? Answer me, please.â
âYou donât need to answer Jake.â Tiger stood in the doorway. âYes, Remi, I was raped. By Chris. Donât blame Jake for not saying anything. I told him not to.
